The First Temple stood until 586 BC. The accession of 'Cyrus the Great' allowed for the building of the Second Temple in 538 BC. In 168 BC Antiochus desecrated the temple. In 165 BC, Judas Maccabeus repaired and rededicated it to the Lord. This marked the beginning of the Jewish holiday Hanukkah.
Around 19 BC, 'Herod the Great' renovated the Temple and it became known as Herod's Temple. It was fully renovated in 64 AD however in 70 AD, the Second Temple was burned and destroyed under Titus and the Roman occupation. Traditionally, the Messiah who builds the 'Third Temple', will be a descendant of King David.
